Alger “Al” Southall, M.D.

Dr. Southall grew up in Louisa, graduated from Louisa County High School, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Richmond. While earning his Doctor of Medicine degree at Medical College of Virginia, he was inducted into the national medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha and received the Family Practice Award for 1980. Knowing he wanted to practice rural family medicine, he completed a residency with Blackstone Family Practice Center. He became Board Certified in Family Practice in 1983, was later inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Family Practice, and has taken many hours of continuing education and comprehensive exams as prescribed by the American Board of Family Medicine to remain Board Certified.

He returned to his hometown in 1983 to establish Louisa Family Practice where he has practiced ever since. From 1985-2017, he served as Medical Director of Louisa Healthcare Center. An Associate Clinical Professor for the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, he has taught medical students the Foundations of Clinical Medicine since 1995. Active in the Louisa community, he has served as the Team Physician for many LCHS athletic teams since 1983, served in various capacities with Louisa Little League, and is a Trustee for Louisa United Methodist Church. He has received the Virginia High School League State Award of Merit, the Jon von Hemert Outstanding Community Service Award, and the Louisa County Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year Award.

He resides in Louisa with his wife Vickie who teaches nursing at the University of Virginia, and they have two adult sons.

Edward “Rex” Lakey Harkrader, M.D.

Dr. Harkrader was born and raised on a beef cattle farm in Louisa and attended Louisa County Public Schools. He graduated from the University of Richmond with a Bachelor’s of Science and a Master’s of Science degree in Biology. Dr. Harkrader earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1992. He completed his internship at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital and his residency at Blackstone Family Practice, concentrating in rural care.

He has practiced medicine at Louisa Family Practice since 1995 and is a board-certified Fellow in the American Academy of Family Practice (FAAFP). He is also an Associate Clinical Professor for the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, teaching and mentoring medical students through family medicine clinical experiences.

Dr. Harkrader is an elder at Gilboa Christian Church and leads the teen Sunday School class. He and his wife, Cheryl, are the proud parents of one grown son and three grown daughters. He enjoys gardening, hunting, and spending time with his family.
